The founder Adanna Ifeoma Enwezor B.A. Sociology (University of Abuja) M.A Global Development in Africa (University of Leeds) |
Her passion for social development, community work and improving the well-being of people led to the birth of her foundation "AFRICAN HAIR SUMMIT" which was launched in June, 2016. African hair Summit is a platform that was created to sensitise people about the toxic chemicals in hair and beauty products, to promote the beauty in the African natural hair and to encourage the local manufacture of organic products. This summit which takes place annually also creates an avenue where varieties of healthy organic hair products are displayed for sale.
Her major inspiration was from her own experience- she suffered terrible burns from a relaxer she used which led her findings on what these hair products are made of and how some of the constituents can cause stunted hair growth and hair loss, fibroid, cancer, receding hair and other illnesses over time.
Also, one of African hair summit's long-term goals is to build a hair, wealth and wellness institute where certain issues can be addressed, researches on hair products will be conducted as well as constituting integral parts that will help drive healthier lifestyle choices.
However, challenges they say are inevitable in life - for African Hair summit, the major challenge was funding initially, now, a lot of people are buying into the natural hair movement so we can rightly say there is a little bit of a soft landing for them.
Hair relaxers are becoming a menace to the society. If we come together, we can help promote growth of African natural hair as well as the use of locally made organic products of the well-being of women and children.
