The Bank Nightclub Abuja- The Stars Assembly!

A

Touch of style and class, the right ambience, beautiful people, most importantly; good music is what you get when you visit one of the hottest nightclubs in Abuja – The Bank! I still remember my first time there- it was an all-girls night out and trust me; it was one of my best nights ever. The bank is where you spend the money with no regrets because indeed, they Bank in style. I was privileged to get in touch with the MD/CEO of the place and all I can say is he is one person who is very passionate and consistent in what he does. I learnt a lot from him and I know someone out there would be inspired too……. Let’s get to know him as I take you through his success story…..

·        Please introduce yourself…..
My name is Uyi Ogbebor and I am the owner of The Bank nightclub Abuja.
·        We wanna get to know you….
Ok. I am the first son in a family of 7. I was born in Akure, Ondo state but I hail from Benin City, Edo state. I attended universal school and police children school for my primary education then proceeded to FUTA staff secondary school for my secondary education. I completed both my primary and secondary education in Akure. Upon my graduation, I got admission into Igbinedion University.
·        You are a very popular person especially when it comes to the night life, how did it all begin?
I came into Abuja in 2008. First of all, I was into wallpaper business - I use to import wallpapers and sell so I did a lot of  Marketing. During the course of that, I met a lot of people- the owner of A- Lounge that is the place where my club is located and I was also opportuned to meet the owner of the GROTTO Lounge to show him some of my wallpapers then I told him I could drag people down to his club because I knew a lot of people based on my kind of business and the university I attended. In June 2011, I became a managing partner of Grotto lounge- my first event was a bachelors’ party and it was a banger! People started visiting the place every weekend and business was good. Soon after, I met the owner for a raise in my salary and he refused to do anything about it so I resigned. I was there for only 6 months. In January 2012, I became one of the managers of Cubana alongside my friend Lanre - we did a little renovation and I branded the place to “Club Vaniti”. We had everyone there every weekend and it was another success. I was there for 2 years.
·        The bank nightclub is one of the most celebrated nightclubs in this city, how did all begin?
At some point, I got tired of being a mediocre, I got tired of managing other people’s business because I know where I am coming from and where I am going to, coupled with the fact that I did some courses in business management, I made up my mind to start doing my own thing. I approached Lanre and talked to him about collaboration so that we can start up our own club but he was reluctant so I left to start off my own. I met people and a lot of them turned me down not until I met Mr. Yankee who was a good influence in propagating my idea. The Bank officially kicked-off in March, 2014 and you would agree with me that it has been a successful journey all the way. In fact, to tell you how successful it was, we were able to pay all our debts in 6 months.
·        So everything was all your idea?
     Yes.
How have you been able to sustain your business judging from the fact the club business is not really a sustainable one especially in the city of Abuja?
I am relentless! I don’t stop pushing! I always strive to stay on top of        my game and God has been faithful.
·        What is your staff strength?
I have about 76 staff and most of them are graduates. In fact, 26 of them are masters degree holders- my general manager has 2 masters. They are all well paid.
·        #tellthetruth- What are the hitches/challenges you currently face in your business?
The Nigerian Economy- the price of drinks is usually determined by FOREX and the inflation of prices really affects us most times because we cannot increase the prices of our drinks so we are usually at a loss. Secondly, we have to always be on our waiters so they remit the right amount to us or else they will swindle us. Lastly, our customers- some of our customers look down on us simply because they know where we started from. They order drinks and they don’t pay, some even go as far as not taking our call or replying messages which may eventually lead to a loss.
·        #dropitlikeitshot- Say something to inspire someone out there…….
Keep pushing, don’t stop and keep doing what you love.
Thank you Uyi for your time, God bless you!

A new definition of sweat and Fun..... the Rapid Paintball Arena!

I
magine yourself as a member of a SWAT team trying to raid a building where some people are being held hostage by gunmen-guns filled with bullets, helmets on, protective masks, protective pads on your knees and elbows, etc bullets fired at you from different angles, you dock sometimes, you get hit sometimes….the anxiety, the fear, cold sweat, your heart’s racing,…. that kind of feeling! In this case the only difference is the paintballs replacing the bullets and the markers replacing the guns but the feeling is the exact same thing!
For all you fun-loving and adventurous people who seek where to channel all your adrenaline, Rapid Paintball Arena (RPA) is the right place. For me, I’d say its way too much stress and fun at the same time because it carries along every single nerve you’ve got. Visit the place “rapidly” because Rapid (as it is fondly called) is the very place. I had one of my best interviews with the Managing Director because it was filled with fun and laughter as he expressed himself in a very ardent but modest way. Be inspired as I take you through it all……
·        Please introduce yourself…
My name is Akintunde Rotimi and I am in my early 30’s. I am the MD/CEO of Rapid Paintball Arena (RPA).
·        We wanna get to know you….
I was born and bred in Lagos state, I have 2 siblings and my parents are both civil servants. I attended Pampas private school where I did my nursery and primary education after which I attended International School of Lagos for my secondary education. Upon the completion of my secondary education, I got admission into University of Lagos where I studied Survey and Geoinformatics, I graduated in 2006.
·        Tell us about Rapid Paintball arena, how did it all begin?
After graduation in 2006, I had a group of friends here in Abuja. We all finished from university at the same time and all our parents were in Abuja as well. During youth service, most of us were serving in or around Abuja so we used to hang out together and do the same regular Abuja activities (clubbing, visiting restaurants, drinking etc). We got bored quickly because most of us lived in Lagos and the fact that we were doing virtually the same thing over and over again made things worse. I had an idea to do something out of the ordinary so we sat down to think of  activities we can put together and do-something that is not yet in Abuja or even in Nigeria. At that time, we were 4 of u right now we are 6. The ideas we came up with were Go carting, paintball, tag, port-biking, off-road carting in fact, it was a long list. This was way back in 2007. Afterwards, we agreed to put one of these things in place- initially, we chose Go carting but the cost of  putting that on ground was way beyond us because we were young and we didn’t want to borrow money or take up loans from banks so we ended up with paintball. We officially kicked off in 2013 at Maitama amusement park and we are proud to say that we are the first paintball company in Abuja. We have four staff- 2 permanent staff and 2 temporary staff and that’s about that.
·        What/ who inspired you to do what you do?
Looking around and seeing how things were and how they should be was an inspiration- there was really nothing different to do at that time in Abuja. The nightlife controlled the city so we wanted something “everyone” could do during the day. Also we wanted something that would not be gender selective- women cannot play football or any other sport with men and vice versa, something that people from different races and religion can accept and it has been successful so far. The basic idea is come, play and have fun and we have been able to achieve that.
·        How do you promote your business?
Social media- we have handles on twitter, Instagram, a facebook page, etc. we also made flyers and distributed to people around at some point, we even had a banner in Silverbird Galleria and also public relations as well.
·        #TelltheTruth- what are the difficulties/challenges you faced/face in your business?
Initially when we started at Maitama amusement park, the place wasn’t really selling and to make matters worse, we had issues with the management of the place which led to an entire shutdown. That was a major setback for us. We also had financial issues- this is due to the fact that we refused to take up loans from banks and decided to strictly fund the whole project privately so it’s been very slow but really steady. Furthermore, people’s opinion concerning the entire thing could be negative sometimes- initially we were faced with security agencies particularly the Nigerian police coming around to see what we are doing, whether we have real guns and bullets in our possessions or whether we are trying to kill people, etc even FCDA and FCTA asking questions and all that but we conquered all that after we showed them all our equipments. Some of them even watched us play sometimes, when they were convinced that what we do is completely harmless, they walk away smiling.
·        What are your dreams for RPA?
RPA is just one out of our bucket lists of things we want to do so it’s a step and we believe there is going to be an expansion. Secondly, we hope our clientele grows so well because we intend to organize interstate tournaments where individuals from different parts of Nigeria compete for the goodies we will set as prizes- that’s our dream!
·        #dropitlikeitshot – say something to inspire someone out there.
Keep your feet on the ground and keep doing what you love.
Thank you Mr. Akintunde for your time….. God bless you!

Brains, sketches and designs with Siaz!!!

S

iaz clothing Nigeria is an upcoming clothing line that kicked off in Abuja years ago. It is well known for outstanding men outfits and designs produced from different fabrics that would thrill you. We got in touch with the MD/CEO of the company and he had a lot to share concerning the birth of his company. Be inspired as we take you through his success story…….
o   Introduce yourself;
My name is Akhibge Solomon Imoukhuede. I am the MD/CEO of Siaz Clothing Nigeria. I am from Edo state and a full, fledged Nigerian.
o      We wanna get to know you!
I was born on 28th July in Benin City, Edo state. I am the second child and only son in the midst of four girls. I attended Garrick memorial nursery, primary and secondary school as well there in Benin city. I got admission into Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma for my tertiary education where I studied industrial mathematics. Upon my graduation, I was posted to Lagos state for my youth service -There, I was fully exposed to the fashion world. Thereafter, I relocated to Abuja to start up my clothing line entirely and it has been an awesome experience so far.
o   Who/what inspired you to do what you do?
My love for fashion designing stirred up while I was in the university so I can say that the world I lived in then inspired me. Also, an exposure to runway modeling under the mentorship of Bayo Adegbe popularly known as “Modella” served as another inspiration-  Bayo is an award winning fashion designer based in Lagos state. He inspired me and also taught me all the things I needed to know about the fashion industry ranging from colour combination, styling and designing as well as branding and textiles. I was so motivated  afterwards though learning how to sew wasn’t part of the plan but because of the incompetency of some tailors, I was forced into it.
o   #Tellthetruth! What are the hitches, challenges and negativities you faced/are currently facing in your business?
Making clothes is not easy at all. You have to think of the right fabric to use, the designs to create, colour combination, etc. Truth be told, there is no style that has not been made before so you have to look for ways to make your designs matchless and that can be an issue sometimes.  Secondly, repeating designs is also a place to look at so you have to be on your toes to think of something different to make. Thirdly, getting the right fabric could be very tough sometimes- you might have the colours stuck in your head but no access to it. Then again, your customers! If you have customers that do not understand or are impatient, you might end up behind bars if something goes wrong…… lol…..least I forget, NEPA!!!!!!……We spend so money buying fuel because of inadequate power supply in the nation and it's so frustrating most times.
o   #Dropitlikeitshot! Say something to inspire someone today;

Never give up. Be determined, consistent and stay focused. Hold on to your dreams and strive to be better. Above all, put God first in all that you do…… God bless!
